The ILO engine plants received a real order boom, especially in the 1950s. Many motorcycle manufacturers chose engines from ILO. Founded as early as 1911, the company produced its first two-stroke engine in 1918, which was used for a track tamping machine. From 1922, the company focused on building engines for motorcycles and small trucks.

In mechanical engineering, moving parts that form a closed cavity with the surrounding housing are called pistons. The volume of the cavity thus created (displacement) can change as a result of the piston's movement. In internal combustion engines, the gasoline-air mixture is compressed by the piston and caused to explode by the spark plug.
