Mit der Entwicklung der YA-1 wurde bei Yamaha die Produktion von Motorrädern eingeläutet. Deshalb wurde 1955 die Yamaha Motor Company gegründet. Sie war eine Kopie der DKW RT 125.

Der Kolbenring ist nicht kreisrund und auch nicht geschlossen. Erst im Einbauzustand wird der Ring in Kreisform gedrückt. Zu seinen Aufgaben zählen die richtige Dosierung des Schmieröls, die Ableitung der Verbrennungswärme und die Abdichtung des Arbeitsraumes.
